2021 Toyota Supra | Living up to the Lineage:
The Supra family has had a strong standing in the automotive world since the beginning. In 1979, the A-40 generation Celica Supra debuted as the first car in the Toyota lineup with electronic fuel injection. This was a monumental milestone in automotive modernization as this new system improved efficiency, reliability, and emissions, which in short are part of Toyota’s key attributes. The word itself means “to surpass” or “go beyond” in Latin. The Supra has always found ways to go beyond the evolving car industry and strive on tracks and streets. Throughout history, the Supra has come with an inline 6 cylinder of some sort, from the original 2.6l to the legendary 2JZ. To put it simply, the 5th generation Toyota Supra upholds the trend of developing innovation and creating the ultimate driving experience. In 2018, Toyota debuted the 5th generation Supra concept at the Geneva Motor Show.
This excited fans all over the world considering the last time the Supra project was running was back in 1996. In 2020, The Mk5 Supra finally hit showrooms and surprised many with its inner workings. Oddly, this Toyota had a BMW chassis and powertrain. This bold choice struck major controversy among fans because it meant an end to having a Japanese-powered Supra. However, as time progressed, people truly became excited about the sheer tunability of the Supra. Outdoing the famous 2JZ-GTE ultimately was an impossible feat, which some still believe to be the case. This being said, BMW has always found ways to create absolute monsters. The B58 has worked in past BMWs and has become a very popular platform. In my opinion, creating a new design on a reliable and powerful powertrain was a brilliant move for Toyota. Not only did the GR Supra 3.0 look beautiful, but it also lived up to its ancestors and fans.
The Beast Inside | The Powertrain:
As previously mentioned the GR Supra 3.0 comes with a 3-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder producing an impressive 382 horsepower at 6500 rpm. With its 8-speed automatic transmission and impressive engine, the Supra became a very impressive performing sports car on the road and the track. The owner Matt, of this particular Supra, definitely concurs with this statement. After the unfortunate event of his previously-owned Dodge Charger Scatpack being stolen, he decided to sell the naturally aspirated V8 for the nimble Toyota Supra. “I love being boosted, but still love my N/A v’8s”, he commented.
Despite being more of a fan of modern cars, Matt can get behind the Supra’s impressive performance throughout history.
Matt’s Ownership Experience | An Exciting Beginning:
After purchasing his Supra, Matt has taken the car all over for various photoshoots and drives. “I have had so many great experiences thanks to my Supra. My favorite time with the Supra so far is my trip to The Tail of the Dragon, in Tennessee. Myself and 4 of my best friends drove our cars down from Kentucky (Porsche 911, BMW M4, Toyota Supra, BMW E36). We spent 3 days having the time of our lives driving the 318 curves over 11 miles. The Supra was completely stock when we went, and now I want to go back to see the difference after installing tires, lowering springs, downpipe, and soon-to-be-tuned. So thankfully for all of the memories and people I have met alongside my Supra so far!” he said.
As an imminent future comes along with switching to new technologies with goals more focused on positive environmental impact, the Supra has been rumored to be discontinued in the next few years. Because of this, Matt plans to keep this car for a long time. While ending a stellar history of performance, I believe the Supra should be a good memory, rather than Toyota ruining its reputation with modest and boring technological evolutions. Unfortunately, we are unable to predict what Toyota will decide to do, but my hope is that the Supra name does not disappoint.
About The Owner | Matt’s Love of Cars:
Matt is a Service Advisor and Influencer from Louisville, Kentucky. He is 21 years old and did not pursue a college education longer than 6 months. He immediately went into the automotive industry after school, which helped him pursue his love for cars. Growing up, Matt was a major fan of car movies, which sparked a long-lasting passion. In addition to his career at the dealership, he is a photographer and more recently started a YouTube channel about his experiences with the Supra. His all-time dream car is either a gated manual Audi R8 V10 or a McLaren 720s. I am excited to see what Matt does in the near future!
